Mixed results in Conference Youth League

The Academy had a mixed week in the Conference Youth League, with fixtures at home to Boston United on Wednesday followed by a trip to Ipswich on Friday.

Boston United came to Nene Park looking for revenge after defeat earlier in the season, as FootballCV Reds had came away with all three points on the opening day of the league season. This proved to be the case, as a strong Boston side took the lead midway through the first half, as the visitors forward was put in the clear, lobbing the advancing Tom Bridle in the home goal. Although the Academy played some tidy football they were unable to find a breakthrough and Boston doubled their lead in the second half. Bridle reacted well to palm away a shot, only to see it fall to a Boston forward who put in the rebound and gave them a 2 – 0 victory.

FootballCV Reds didn’t have too much time to reflect on the defeat, as on Friday they travelled to Ipswich in a re-arranged fixture. With the Reds looking to amend for two defeats to start 2010 they were in no forgiving mood and after 25 minutes a well worked goal undone the Ipswich defence. After neat build up play down the right, the resulting in swinging cross was met by Tobi Oganla, whose near post run allowed him to guide the ball with his head into the far left corner. The second half continued as the first, with the Academy in dominant form and it was no surprise that a through ball found the unmarked Rikki Everett, who round the home goalkeeper, before sliding the ball into the goal from a tight angle. FootballCV Reds gave a comprehensive all round performance and the 2 – 0 victory moved them up to third in the league.

Next week will see the Academy twice on the road, as firstly they travel to Birmingham on Wednesday, before an away fixture at St Albans on Friday.
