Academy left to curse late equaliser
After a week long break for half term, FootballCV Reds were back in action in the Football Conference Youth Alliance at home to Oxford City Blues.
On a heavy pitch due to the recent bad weather, the Academy were unlucky not to go ahead after 15 minutes, Jesse Nava’s shot cannoned off the cross bar to the relief of the visiting goalkeeper. The breakthrough though came on 30 minutes, Rikki Everett managed to out muscle Oxford’s centre half and coolly finished in to the far corner with the outside of his right foot.
With Tom Bridle picking up and injury in the home goal the second half started with 2nd year Keegan Savige between the posts. Unfortunately within 5 minutes of the re-start he was picking the ball out of the goal as Oxford City’s bright start to the second half paid off. Nava who was a constant threat all afternoon, follow up hitting the crossbar in the first half, by being denied for a second time as his effort crashed off the post keeping the scores level.
With the game now tightly poised, first years Gerardo Cozzolino and Calaum Hemmings-Martin came on and it was later who turned provider for the Academy to regain the initiative. Hemmings-Martin cut inside his marker and saw his shot deflected into the path of the grateful Tom Colclough, who smashed the ball into the net from 10 yards. As the game drew towards a close Oxford City pressed forward for an equaliser and the pressure finally told. With the Academy struggling to clear their lines the ball bounced around the box and was driven home to the delight of the visiting players.
With the points being shared, FootballCV Reds now turn their attention to Friday and the second local derby on the season against Rushden and Diamonds. With Rushden taking the points earlier in the season with a late winner the Academy will be looking for revenge and the opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders.
