Player's European trial a great success

During the half term period last week first year Sam Conway, second year Daena Bodie and Head Coach Danny Nicholls travelled to the Czech Republic, both Sam and Daena had been invited by Division Two Czech side Banik Most for a week’s trial. Below Sam Conway writes about his experience and time at Most:

"After being told the news by Academy Head Coach Danny Nicholls we would be travelling and staying in the Czech Republic for a week, both Daena and myself were really looking forward to the opportunity. Being given the chance to show our talents to a Professional European club, we knew it would be a very good experience. For the whole plane trip we were buzzing about getting there and seeing the Czech Republic for the first time, I couldn’t wait.

We were picked up at the airport and drove just over an hour to get to Most, on the way there it was sparse with a lot of country side. Everything was covered in snow and we were later told it was the worst snow they had had in 30 years, I believe if would have been very beautiful without the snow. When we got to the stadium we were shown around the ground, including the coaches room, changing rooms, gym and VIP areas. Daena, Danny and myself were staying at the stadium in the clubs purpose built flats.

We trained soon after we had arrived and both of us were pretty nervous but excited at the same time, especially to see what the standard and coaching was like. It was minus 10 degrees celsius when we trained, but it didn’t feel that cold. On arrival at training we were introduced by the coach to the players, there were some Armenian boys, French boys and even Brazilian boys. It was difficult to pick up on what our Coach wanted us to do as he was speaking Czech, but with demonstration and seeing what the other boys did first we were able to figure it out. It does make you realise how much you need to understand your coach when it comes to training.

We took part in many drills during the training sessions, we would do possession for about 10 minutes, then move on to crossing and finishing, before finishing off with mini 5 v 5’s. I found it very different to English coaching as they changed to a different drill after only 5 – 10 minutes, so as you were getting into the stride of things it would change.

After training there was a local Tesco which both Daena and myself would visit, whilst we would also met up with Danny for a walk around Most. The area is very open and not too many people, but they were all very friendly and nice, taking time to communicate with us. Most is approximately an hour away from Prague and we were due to visit the city but unfortunately never managed to fit this in due to our training schedule. The food was different to what we have at the Academy, but they were very good in offering us different types of food to suit us.

It was a great experience for all of us and we appreciated the time the Coaching staff at Banik gave to us during the week, which included working with the senior coaching staff at the club. We were grateful for their positive feedback we received and I’m sure we would go back again should the opportunity arise."
